engine knocks at start up

Postby insulatormike on Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:41 am

I have gotten some good pointers from another forum for Geo's but for some reason I cant get back on there. My engine knocks until what seems to be the oil pressure builds up some guys have said piston skirt, connecting rod cap and oil pressure relief valve. So I was wondering what you all thought....hope someone can shed some light on this enigma. I've checked all of the above and all is well on those options provided the relief valve is on the bottom of the oil pump and held in by a snap ring. Makes no sense if its a bad bearing than shouldnt it be noisy all the time?

The early ones had solid lifters, so make knocking noise when cold if valve lash is out of adjustment, like mine is now. Heavier knock could be wrist pins; these can wear out from running low oil level in the pan, since the pins rely on splash oiling. I just had my Toyota 4 banger rebuild because of that.
